Back Lake

North of the 45th Parallel in Pittsburg, NH, you’ll find Back Lake. A tributary to the Connecticut River, this small lake offers the area’s best sunsets. Back Lake is located five miles north of the village of Pittsburg NH. The oval shaped trout lake reaches depths of just over 10′.

Vacationers enjoy the numerous lodges and cabins on the lake shore and the easy paddling on the shallow waters. Anglers come to Back Lake to fish the spring fed lake for brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and smallmouth bass.

Fishing Regulations

Brook Trout – Brook trout, rainbow trout, and brown trout. Fishing season begins on the fourth Saturday of April through October 15th. The daily limit is five fish or five pounds whichever comes first with no length limit.

Smallmouth Bass – Fish smallmouth bass beginning April 1. There is a two fish limit from April 1 to May 14. From May 15 to June 15, catch and release with flies or artificial lures only. From June 16 to June 30 there is a two fish limit. Beginning July 1, the daily limit is five fish or five pounds whichever comes first with no length limit.

Daily bag limit for lake trout and salmon is 2 fish (2 lake trout, 2 salmon, or 1 of each).

Boat Launches on Back Lake

There are two boat launches on Back Lake in Pittsburg.

  • There is a gravel boat launch on Spooner Road. Use this launch for boats on trailers. There is limited parking for vehicles and trailers.
  • On Beach Road, the is a launch for car top watercraft. There is a picnic area and small beach area for swimming.  Launch water crafts such as kayaks and canoes here. Parking is limited.

Back Lake Boating Regulations

No person shall operate a motorboat at a speed exceeding 10 MPH. However, this restriction shall not apply between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. daily on that portion of Back Lake in Pittsburg easterly of a line running from Washburn’s Camp on the south to the New Hampshire Guide’s Lot on the north. Persons 16 years old and older who operate a motorboat over 25 hp or a ski craft in New Hampshire must have a boating education certificate.
